There is little doubt that Rustic is one of the most popular wedding styles in recent years. Full of earthy elements and with a natural charm, the Rustic vibe appeals to many, whether your wedding is in an urban or countryside setting. Budget-friendly, easy-to-achieve and forgiving on imperfections, Rustic also opens up many opportunities to include homemade decor pieces – and who doesn’t love a down-to-earth & DIY wedding?
Rustic decor is the most searched for wedding theme on Pinterest, and it is easy to love indeed with it’s quirky, relaxed and romantic atmosphere. But through years of over-use , the excessive presence of the mason jar, burlap and lace combo has become predictable and pretty unexciting. What used to be niche and innovative, has now become commercialized and dreary. By now, you can find burlapped wedding decor and many different sizes of mason jars in any Chinese discount shop – brilliant for school craft projects or market stalls, but if you are aiming for an unique and individualized look, try to leave mason jars out from your 2018 wedding, and keep the hessian for storing sacks of grain.
It is time to find a newer version of Rustic (because it deserves to stick around for a lot longer) and refresh this gorgeous decor style by exploring further and bringing in more pioneering and exciting features. Tip: don’t even look at Pinterest for inspiration – look in nature or nearest rural village.
When choosing to implement a Rustic decor, understand that a beautiful setting, lots of foliage and beautiful earth-toned linen will go a long way to create your wedding paradise. Swapping the standard blackboard sign to a stained and varnished wood will take your rustic wedding into 2018 – also consider glass or acrylic for a modern look. Rethink the wooden box centerpiece by collecting vintage glass bottles as vases, and even using potted herbs. And for the DIY enthusiasts, there is still plenty of scope for making your decor yourself using earthy components such as wood slices, branches, tree stumps and wild flowers.
Simplicity is more than often the secret to a stunning wedding event – a minimal approach will enhance the beauty of the day as opposed to stealing attention away from what’s essential – the Bride and Groom!
At the same time, don’t be afraid to add brightness to your color scheme – just because you want an earthy vibe, doesn’t mean your entire wedding has to be the color of mud and potatoes. Instead of sticking to the “safe” accent colors like pastel pink and light peach, try the richer variants, radiant purple, zesty orange and various shades of green.
Juxtaposition is your friend for a creative and interesting wedding. Maybe you’re marrying the farmer’s son, but don’t feel forced to use only rusty farm equipment, watering cans and vegetable boxes in your décor – go further by adding a Modern breeze with transparency and marble details, or an air of Industrial using statement light bulbs and metallic elements. An addition of Whimsical or Boho elements, or a Fine Art touch could raise your Rustic wedding to new levels.
A note on hay bales: a popular element in Rustic or Barn weddings, this might seem like a charismatic way to seat your guests at the ceremony – but keep the allergenic factor in mind before you place the order. Plus, you will also need as as many thick blankets to prevent prickled bottoms, scratched legs and torn hosiery + cleanup and lifting bales afterwards – it might just be better to rent chairs, after all! Go for vintage or wooden chairs, and you have nailed Rustic Elegance with everybody’s comfort saved. Or choose bales covered in plastic- although there goes the charm factor… Lastly, all that hay is a potential fire hazard too – so why not just leave it for the cattle!
Full of life, texture and color, this revived yet recognizably still Rustic inspiration below proves that this lovable and appealing wedding style doesn’t have to be repetitive any longer.
